(Lactuca sativa) Grows into beautiful green rosettes that are crisp, yet tender, and do not have the bitterness of some leafy greens. While Butterhead lettuces were developed later in Europe and even in the United States, lettuce was originally a wild plant. Through relationships with different peoples, thousands of varieties of lettuce have appeared across the globe. In Egypt, archaeologists discovered a mural dating back 5,000 years that appears to depict lettuce cultivation.
Planting suggestions: Plant seeds at a depth of ⅛-¼” in rows 1 ft apart. Sow seeds every 1” and thin so plants are 8-10” apart. You can sow these seeds in full sun/partial shade once the soil is workable. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous harvest throughout the season. Hot weather makes lettuce bolt, but this type of lettuce is more heat tolerant than many varieties. 60-65 days till maturity.
